Gravel Treatment Facilities

Use cobblestones to treat sewage; the natural one is the best. What is “Gravel Contact Oxidization”? Have you ever heard that stones can treat sewage too?

Utilize the biofilm attached to the sur face of natural cobblestones to adsorb and decompose pollutants in the sewage; let the sewage be purified and then discharged to the river that can improve the water quality of the river. The treated water can also be used to irrigate lawn, increasing the reuse of water resources.

Operation Theory of Gravel Contact Oxidization Plant

Take the “Jingmei Gravel Contact Oxidization Plant” Project for example; this project intercepts the sewage during sunny days in Jingmei area; after de-fouling, sedimentation procedures, sent into the cobblestones tank 38m long, 21m wide and 5m deep. The cobblestones are natural cobblestone grains with a diameter of about 10 to 25 cm. The porosity must exceed 40%. The biofilm formed by the microorganisms attached to the surface of the cobblestones can absorb and decompose the pollutants in the sewage. It can treat up to 7,000 cubic meters of sewage per day, and are discharged to Wansheng Creek after the water purification purpose is achieved. “Small stones” play a big role in sewage treatment. Five “Gravel Contact Oxidization Plant” fields in Taipei City are used to improve river water quality.

The Sewage Systems Office builds five “Gravel Contact Oxidization Plant” processing facilities, named Nanhu, Chengmei, Guiyang, Zhongxiao and Jingmei processing fields at the high bench-lands outside the Keelung River, Danshui River and Wansheng Creek. It applies the method of naturally using the “bio-membrane” formed by the microorganisms attached to the surface of cobblestones to adsorb and decompose pollutants in sewage; express the “membrane ability” in sewage treatment. The five “Gravel Contact Oxidization Plant” processing facilities can treat about 64,000 cubic meters of sewage per day; showing that the small cobblestones also can do great work.

Do you want to take a look at it? You can see the process of cobblestones purifying sewage at the observation gallery of the “Gravel Contact Oxidization Plant” processing facilities, and fishes swim in the water. The upper green space is also open for sports and leisure places such as football and mallets. Interpretation notice boards add funs to environmental education. People and groups are welcome to call (25973183) to register and experience the mysteries of nature.
